Establishment and Facilities

Thandalam, situated in the Periya Palayam block of Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu, is the birthplace of Jagadguru Pujyasri Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswati Sankaracharya Swamigal of the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham.

Historically lacking a primary health center, the village saw the inception of a modest rural clinic in 2019, offering bi-weekly consultations by a local doctor and nursing support on other days. Recognizing the pressing healthcare needs, the Sankara Rural Medical Center was established to provide comprehensive medical services.

With a generous CSR grant from Canara Bank, a well-equipped facility was constructed, featuring:

  • Pharmacy: Dispensing medications at subsidized prices.
  • Clinical Laboratory: Conducting essential diagnostic tests.
  • Doctor’s Consultation Room: For regular medical check-ups.
  • Dental Center: Offering oral health services.
  • Vision Center: Providing eye care services.
  • Emergency Beds: Four beds designated for immediate care needs.

Additionally, the facility includes accommodations for on-call doctors, ensuring 24/7 medical availability.

Inauguration and Management

The center was officially inaugurated on July 11, 2021, by the then Governor of Tamil Nadu, Sri Banwarilal Purohit. A strategic Memorandum of Understanding with Chettinad Hospitals facilitates the medical management of the center.

This partnership ensures that patients requiring advanced care are seamlessly transferred to Chettinad Hospital, where they receive treatment at highly subsidized rates or, when necessary, free of cost.

Community Impact

To make healthcare accessible, the center charges a nominal consultation fee of ₹10, with medications provided at reduced prices. In emergencies necessitating hospitalization, patients are transported to Chettinad Hospital via ambulance, ensuring timely and efficient care.
